A gastric emptying scan is a nuclear medicine exam that uses a radioactive material eaten in a meal. This material allows doctors to see problems related to how your stomach empties.
You will be asked to have nothing by mouth for 4 hours before the study. You will be given a bowl of eggs that has been injected with a small dose of radioactive material. You will be asked to eat the eggs within 10 minutes. The egg will taste just like a regular egg. If you are allergic to eggs, please inform the technician.
After eating, you will be asked to lie flat on your back while the camera takes pictures of your stomach. You must not move when the camera is taking pictures. Moving will make the pictures blurry, and they may have to be taken again.
From start to finish, your Gastric Emptying Scan will take about 3-4 hours. There are several parts to the test. We will take images every hour.
